FEATHER GANG OF HOOLIGANS, Outcasts AND KERFLUFFLES:

HEAD OFFICE CHICKEN, NELLY P. ROOSTER - we are so sad to have to write an update here, that our beloved Nelly recently left this earth (Jan 2017) at the incredible old age of 16-17 years. That is like being 100, in chicken years. Nelly was the first chicken we took in, 9 years ago. He had severe birth defects to both feet, but despite this he not only walked, he ran and played and was his awesome rooster-self. As long as he was on soft surfaces like the grass or blankets, he was fine... and we are honored to have been his family. In the last year and a half, he stopped being able to walk, but enjoyed special-needs "elder" care, extra treats and always, an overflow of love. It is hard after caring for someone for so many years to adjust to life without his little sweet physical presence, but Nelly is always going to be in our hearts. A special tribute page to "the bird who started it all" will be forthcoming. We are still grieving for the loss of our dear longtime friend.

LITTLE "BUCKEYE" BUCKLES! A rescued Kapporos Chicken, who was about to be ritually slaughtered in Brooklyn. She and Pancakes were rescued at the same time, and are an inseparable couple. She has a limp - partially a result of some trauma she experienced to her leg and foot, which we can only guess about: one of her toes on that foot is missing by half and needed treatment when we got her home. We think her toe got caught between crates (the cruel and frightening way these chickens are shipped around) and was somehow severed, injuring her leg in the process. Despite this, she is cuddly, loving and curiously explores.

LITTLE LARRY! Aside from this photo, Larry lives in technicolor. He is a bundle of joy that makes us want to say hi to every single flower, every day! Rescued from being a mail-order chick sent as an "office joke" to a secretary in NYC on her birthday, he is the gentlest of the bunch, deferring always to Blanche and making sure she eats first. See the VIDEO tab for incredible cuteness from Larry - the story of how he came to live with us as a little chick, and why we look forward to waking up to see this little sweet fella every single day.

RESIDENT BOSSY-PANTS, BLANCHE! She is a Polish "lace" hen, found near an abandoned house in NJ by friends in early 2016. As beautiful as she is, she suffers from the same problems (and others) that all domesticated chickens have to deal with... laying more eggs than nature would ever deem possible, and also the fancy "coiffure" that people find so entertaining reduces her peripheral vision and makes her vulnerable to predators. Blanche CANNOT be contained - she is not happy unless she is covering a million miles a day and exploring, so we kind of "helicopter mom" her time outdoors when she is free ranging. She is just the kind of gal who gets into heaps of mischief.

Handsome MR. PANCAKES! Rescued along with Buckles from being ritually slaughtered in Brooklyn in a Kapporos ceremony, Pancakes is completely sweet and lovable. He has a terrible bent leg thanks to a blown tendon (common in this human-created breed of bird, who was "designed" by the animal agriculture industry to grow so heavy they are unable to even support their own weight) but Pancakes is receiving all the love and care we can give him, on special diets, so he will have as good quality of life as possible. He and Buckles cry when separated, and sleep cuddled together.

NERMAL... the only one with fur and not feathers. She was found when she was just a kitten, completely alone in a bush, and was taken to another animal shelter where we were told she would not leave her cage even when the door was open. In 15 minutes we had bonded, and we adopted her. She dutifully watches over the feather gang, and otherwise just hangs around being super cute.
