They monitor the humidity and temperature and send the data to apps on our cellphone, so we can check on their comfort at all hours and even while running an errand! We love how this tech helps us provide quality of life and better care!</image:caption>

<image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - TeenyTinyTony Orlando</image:title>
<image:caption>ARRIVED AT IFAH: June 2017 AGE AT TIME OF ARRIVAL: Unknown YEARS AT IFAH: just approaching 5 years CURRENT AGE: Unknown but at least 5 1/2 years Rescued by caring activists from a live exposed to the elements on the Cross Bronx Expressway, he was rescued with little Dawn the hen, and they were extremely bonded. Sadly, Dawn passed of Egg Yolk Peritonitis a year into their time here, but Tony (or, “Rigatoni” as he is lovingly nicknamed) continues to tend to a growing flock of rescued hens and is quite the romantic, wooing pretty much every hen that arrives here no matter how big or small. He is utterly adorable (small but not the smallest rooster here anymore, since Hall & Oates were rescued!) with a lovely plumed tail that looks like it has been dipped in ink… and he’s a beloved busy-body who is always getting into trouble. He is a very doting rooster to the two hens in his coop, Almondine and Pickles. We adore this little fella.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ARRIVAL AT IFAH: May 2018 AGE UPON ARRIVAL: Unknown but at least 1 yr. YEARS AT IFAH: 4 years CURRENT AGE: At least 5 years old as of 2022. We saw a post on Facebook about a hen wandering around a rural area (Kerhonksen, NY) for a week - it is a miracle she lasted that long with no shelter as it had been a week of heavy rainstorms. You can see her before and after photos on the Transformations page of our site… but she was almost bald, missing so many feathers, and emaciated when we drove to the area to pick her up (thanks to a local couple who fed her seeds to keep her within their site until we could get there!) She had to be treated for parasites (Coccidia) as well, but since then, she has thrived here, receives regular medical hormone therapy to give her body a much-needed break from egg-laying, and is beloved by Little TeenyTinyTony Rooster.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ARRIVED AT IFAH: August 2020 AGES AT INTAKE: 10 months to 1 year TIME AT IFAH: 2 years AGE: Approximately 3 years old Hall (& Oates) were rescued by locals Gregg & Barton here in Woodstock, after a neighbor of theirs had seen these two tiny bantam roosters in the woods. Gregg drove over and immediately was able to catch them! Beautiful, sweet boys, they seem very socialized to humans and were most likely chicks that someone purchased and cared for, who were abandoned when they began to crow. A shocking number of roosters are abandoned by people very year, who purchase chicks or hatching eggs to have “backyard eggs” only to find out their chicks are roosters who won’t lay eggs. A horrific number of rooster chicks are also destroyed by industry as soon as they are born, just because the egg industry has no use for them and they are so cheap. The methods that are used for killing them - - 250 million rooster chicks a year - are horrific. We are so thankful that by some miracle, these two made it to sanctuary. We look forward to providing more updates soon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>RESCUED BY IFAH: August 22, 2021 AGE UPON ARRIVAL: Unknown but at least 1 year MONTHS/YEARS AT IFAH: One year CURRENT AGE: Unknown but at least 2 years We saw a post on Facebook in a local vegan forum, asking for help capturing a chicken in Kingston, NY. A bird was seen on a street with cars and traffic, and the good-hearted person (our friend, Maria!) was worried not only about the hen being hit by a car or starving, but Hurrican Ida was moving into the area that same afternoon! We grabbed supplies and got to Kingston, managing to work with Maria to capture little RBG within literally just a half hour of the rain storm barreling down. We named her RBG because of her beautiful “lace collar” that reminded us of Justice Ruth, and because this little hen is more determined that any we have met in a long time. Every day she is on a mission and covers more ground than anyone here. We’ll never know her age or her story - - we are just glad she is safe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ARRIVED AT IFAH: September 2021 AGE AT TIME OF ARRIVAL: Unknown YEARS AT IFAH: In his third year here. CURRENT AGE: Unknown Mehnamena was rescued by our wonderful board member, Helena Kaminski and her partner Jake! They managed to capture Mehnamena who had been abandoned in a park in Catskill that is popular for walking dogs. Mehnamena is a feisty and empowered sweet boy with beautiful feathers that sparkle in the sun. He dotes on the hens in his flock and is so protective of them. He is a big sweet boy and we are so thankful he made it here to this microsactuary for lifelong protection and care. Roosters are abandoned - literally “dumped” - in huge numbers because they don’t lay eggs, and many people consider their crowing to be a problem (it is music to our ears.) The problem of dumped and abandoned roosters is massive and millions are put to death straight out of the shell, at hatcheries and farms around the globe, let alone the ones that are “farmed” to be made into “meat.” Mehnamena is someONE, not someTHING. Roosters are living beings with special socialization needs and understanding, and inborn instincts and behavior that are natural to them and necessary for them. They are the “invisible” victims of the egg industry. Please go vegan to save beautiful birds like Mehnamena.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rescued in February of 2022. Aviva was rescued by staffer Kate! She was the last surviving hen in a flock “owned” by a woman who did not provide any predator protection for the chickens in her care; they were all killed by a neighbors dog and various predators, and little Aviva was the only one that survived. We are so thankful Kate advocated for her and got her to safety, here. Aviva is an extremely shy hen but has found a good life and “family” here in her flock that includes Mehnamena (rooster) and Ruth Birder Ginsbird (hen). This flock helped “inaugurate” our new location, having moved with us from our old site in Woodstock to a beautiful new, airy and bright insulated coop here in Rhinebeck.</image:caption>

CURRENT AGE: Unknown Rescued by caring activists at Sweet Peace Microsanctuary and transported here by the incredible artist and sanctuary volunteer/supporter, Bird, sweet “Bisi” (as we love to call her, because she always seems to be super busy!) arrived with a previously fractured foot that had healed improperly (likely on it’s own with no splinting) and she walks with a limp. Knowing she would have trouble keeping up with an able-bodied flock, we were happy to welcome her here for lifelong care, and she has become a bonded friend with our first Pekin Duck resident, Moonbeam. Bisi was named in honor of the brave and beloved journalist in Gaza, Bisan. You can support and follow her work here.</image:caption>

<image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - Moonbeam</image:title>
<image:caption>ARRIVED AT IFAH: June 2023 AGE AT TIME OF ARRIVAL: Unknown YEARS AT IFAH: In her first year here. CURRENT AGE: Unknown Moonbeam, a Pekin Duck, was a “pet*” duck who was left outside with no shelter in a bad storm. A tree branch fell on her, injuring her badly so that she could no longer walk. No X-ray was done, so it was surmised that her spine was broken. Apparently after that, she was tripped over (actually, on) and suffered fractures to her right wing and left foot. She also had extremely “runny” eyes. Good samaritans reached out to us here and just as we were in the early phases of a grueling relocation to our current location. The minute we got settled, we were excited to welcome Moonbeam here for lifelong care, and start a new chapter for IFAH as our FIRST duck in residence. We shared the cost of the X-ray with the Foster Parrot Society in LI who had advocated for her, taken her in for initial care and veterinary exam, and transported her here (we are so grateful to partner with wonderful organizations like this who are so above-and-beyond caring!) The X-ray revealed Moonbeams spine was actually not broken, and had actually not suffered any breaks. While this was the best news, the concern is that it is too late to expect any improvement - due to what is likely severe atrophy in the early stages of her initial injury. We continue to do gentle physical therapy for her, and she is able to swim well too which is a real blessing as that is the best way for her to have quality of life considering her mobility challenges! We also welcomed a second duck, Bisan, who lives with some mobility challenges herself, due to a fractured foot that healed with no guidance and support - - and it is wonderful to see Bisan and Moonbeam find friendship and camaraderie and solidarity with each other. (*we encourage people to replace the term “pet” with ther terms like Animal Companion or Non-human family member. Even better, just say: friend or family member! “Pet” is an industry term that imbeds speciesism in our society and it is important as part of creating positive change to embrace terms that help create cultural shifts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ARRIVED AT IFAH: February 2024 AGE AT TIME OF ARRIVAL: 1 month TIME AT IFAH: just approaching 2 months CURRENT AGE: 3 months old Rescue Story: Rescued by our board member Nancy Childress. Dear Miracle was the lone surviving chick in a flock “owned” by a local young man who took his own life. While she was in decent health when she got here, though underweight, she endured the trauma of seeing all her friends/family picked off one by one by predators, and had been in the “care” of someone who suffered from mental illness and sadly did not understand protective care for themself, let alone a tiny bird. She is adjusting well to life here and has recently joined TeenyTinyTony’s flock. Slowly, with socialization and time, the other hens (Almondine and Pickles) are getting used to her and becoming more accepting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ARRIVED AT IFAH: March 2024 AGE AT TIME OF ARRIVAL: Unknown YEARS AT IFAH: In her first year here. CURRENT AGE: Unknown Carol made history when we arranged to have her transported here by the incredible group, Pilots to the Rescue, who previously to this, worked solely on transports of canines rescued from puppy mills in the south. Carol and her hen friend Schmoopie were both birds who had been surrendered to the wonderful North Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, who then reached out to us to see if we could give them the lifelong special care they would both be needing. Pilots to the Rescue transported them both from North Carolina to a small airport in NJ where we picked them up and transported them to their new home here! Carol can’t walk due to a bent leg that was the result of birth defects (that sadly are quite common in chickens, as so many mother hens used for breeding are overbred and suffer malnutrition via uncaring farms and businesses.) Both Carol and Schmoopie had a bad case of mites that were treated and quickly cleared up… and they both received reproductive care via our local veterinarian for the first time in their lives. Both Carol and Schmoopie were easily integrated into the “Cloud Society” here (a dear flock of birds with different disabilities) where they seem overjoyed to final have found friends and the flock community that will help them lead richer lives filled with special relationships. It’s a mistake to think disabled birds have to be alone. While socializing them into a group of able-bodied birds may not work, they can have incredible quality of life when carefully introduced and socialized with other birds who have special needs. The Cloud Society is a magical flock here that lives, in winter and bad weather, in our beautiful and cheerful “Special Care Wing” and they have special outdoor enclosures that allow them to enjoy grass, sun and fresh air in safety and with protection. Schmoopie and her hen friend Carol were both birds who had been surrendered to the wonderful North Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, who then reached out to us to see if we could give them the lifelong special care they would both be needing. Schmoopie has a pretty severe crossed beak - a condition that generally begins to a chick while developing in-egg, and is caused by malnutrition of the mother hen. Having a crossed (or “scissor”) beak can make it difficult if not sometimes impossible for a chicken to eat food and get enough nutrients, so Schmoopie needs special, extremely careful beak trims and to be served special “mashes” and foods by hand and with observation daily to make sure her intake and weight remain healthy. She had a bad case of mites that were cleared up, and received reproductive care for the first time in her life. We are so thankful this adorable and sweet hen is here! <image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - Nelly</image:title>
<image:caption>Gone but never forgotten, Nelly was a little rooster who inspired us to start the Institute, and who overcame so much. He came into a very huge rescue where I was working, and I took him home to give him more dedicated care. Despite being born with severe birth defects to both feet, he not only lived, but he thrived and proved to us that chickens - especially roosters - were being terribly misjudged, unfairly maligned and disregarded when it came to receiving care. He taught us that everyone deserves a chance. He was fierce and loving and cuddly and insisted on being recognized, understood and never taken for granted. We brought him home to give him special care when he was already 6 years old, and he lived with us to be nearly 16 years old! Everything we do is because of Nelly, and we'll never ever stop thanking this sweet soul for the gift of his friendship.</image:caption>

<image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - Tina Warhol</image:title>
<image:caption>Tina was found on a road in the middle of an upstate NY road, in the of nowhere, with blood on her beak, unable to stand on her own. We don't know how she got there but she may have been side-swiped by a car, or dropped by a predator. Polish Hens (her breed) have been bred to have fanciful "hairdos" and one of the downsides of this unnatural trait is the inability to have decent peripheral vision. Luckily friends driving that road found her that day, and we took to her in. She was a great little friend to Nelly Rooster. But female chickens have been bred by humans to have botched biology; engineered to lay a nearly impossible number of eggs per year, the egg-laying has devastating consequences for all hens and Tina, like so many others, passed away from reproductive illness.</image:caption>

<image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - Larry</image:title>
<image:caption>ARRIVAL AT IFAH: April 2012 AGE UPON ARRIVAL: Unknown but only weeks old! He was a baby chick. AGE UPON PASSING: 8.5 years YEARS AT IFAH: Nearly 9 years with us… his whole life. Larry was sent to NYC and left on the desk of a secretary as a "gift" from her boss. She realized she couldn't keep a chicken in her NYC apartment, and thankfully, did not simply dispose of him as happens to millions of rooster chicks per year. She called the animal rescue where I worked at the time, but they did not feel they had a place for him. He was the third chicken we took in, and he was with us for his entire life. A gentle soul, his breed - Silkies - are bred mostly for "entertainment and folly" purposes but despite how extra cute and fluffy they are, they are still slaughtered and eaten by the millions; they are actually considered a "delicacy" in some cuisines and can be found in NYC live-kill markets. Little Larry was/is an incredible emissary for his kind. He greeted everyone with curiosity and happy dance, welcoming feather fluffs on his chest and eagerly accepting attention and confirmation of his all-powerful rooster-ness. His passing was a huge loss, and we feel his absence every day. INTERESTING FACTS: Chickens have the intelligence of human toddlers, but the more they are studied, the more they seem to be in many ways more advanced and faster learners than humans when they are born! Chickens actually talk to their mother from INSIDE THE EGG before they are born, helping her know when they are ready to hatch. They have a language of dozens of words, including, for instance, a separate word for "hawk" and for "owl" when a bird flies overhead. The chickens at the Institute all use the same vocalizations when one of our resident cats or any of us humans saunter through their living areas.</image:caption>

<image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - Buckles</image:title>
<image:caption>Buckles is a towering figure to us… Rescued from the Kaporos Rituals in NYC in 2016, he lived to be 3 and a half years old with us. While we had hoped he would be with us longer, 3.5 years for a Cornish chicken is still beating so many odds. The challenges Cornish face are too numerous to list here, and Buckles had more than his share - - including a horrific injury he sustained in transport to be slaughtered, where part of his toe was severed and his leg pulled out of alignment. With physical therapy and intense care, he survived, with a resulting limp that just made him more endearing and heroic. He was cuddly and friendly and curious, and loved people and treats and forging his way around the big yard here. While we adore everyone here, the ones like Buckles who overcome physical injury have an extra special place in our hearts, and seem all the more mythical in how they triumphed, to get to sanctuary. He will be forever missed. Photo by Janet Holmes</image:caption>

<image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - Festus, Funyons & Toodle Lou</image:title>
<image:caption>We received word from a concerned activist that a woman had posted on Facebook that she had brought these three birds in order to learn how to slaughter them “using a youtube video” but then changed her mind. She was going to give them to another person to butcher if no one came to get them. We raced in our car to drive the three hours to get to them (unfortunately in our haste and driving in a place we did not know, incurred a speeding ticket) but we got there in time. They were all in terrible shape when we brought them to the vet - had coccidia, were pale in their combs, and weak and bloated. They had been housed in the barest of structures that could be called a coop - in disgusting conditions. It was heartbreaking, but we slowly worked to heal their parasites and get them to better health. Unfortunately, all three were very challenged and did not last long, but Cornish as a breed have been manipulated by humans to be too overweight, to have bad bones and joints, and be prone to cancers and horrible illnesses due to their bad immune systems overall. It was heartbreaking to see them pass despite all efforts, one after the other… this photo is of their first day out of quarantine, though… the coccidia at least abated… and to see them snuggle on the grass, and see Toodle Lou blink up at the sky, is something we try to remember and hold on to. Sometimes when these beings are rescued, they are basically still just going into hospice. We do whatever we can and love them for who they are, for the time that we have with them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>AGE UPON ARRIVAL: 3 months YEARS AT IFAH: One and a half. Avery came to the Institute with Matilda - both born as part of a chick-hatching project at a school in NJ. Tragically, as often happens with those projects, three birds came out deformed. One had to be euthanized, but Avery and Matilda was lovingly nursed by the teacher who was completely changed by the entire experience, and sensitized to the reality of of school projects using live animals. We did our best for both Avery and Matilda, and loved them so much… but outer deformities often belie internal issues as well, and they both passed from complications related to their physical challenges. It was an honor to care for them, from getting Avery his wheelchair to building slings for Matilda to support her body. In their brief time, they did experience love, care, sun and grass… and were treated as the wonderful and utterly adorable individuals that they are.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roody Astoria was rescued by the wonderful activists of NEW YORK FARM ANIMAL SAVE (NYFAS); surrendered literally right on the sidewalk outside of a kill market in NYC, and ferried to safety by those incredibly caring souls. It broke our hearts when he passed away at a veterinary office during a medical procedure. He was gone way too soon. We will never forget this special, sweet fella with such a kind personality, a voice like a gentle sousaphone, and who delighted to experience the grass, sun and friends here.</image:caption>

<image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - Chico</image:title>
<image:caption>He had 3 1/2 good years here , which, for his breed (Cornish - who have huge health challenges caused by human manipulation of their biology) can be considered a small miracle. So many of his kind don’t make it to even see one year. His heart actually just gave out, and ours broke with it. There are some beings who come here who require extra effort; make us rise to another level… Chico and his partner Penguin were two such souls. Their story is so epic… and required us to learn a lot in a short time and build an entirely separate coop and yard for them due to an illness they had… a yard and coop that had to be maintained to strict and special protocols (Rebecca even sitting in the snow several times daily to take different boots on and off, as well as a lot of fastidious care)…. but he was so dear, and so worth it. Chico was doing so well that after some time, even though we thought it was magical thinking, we decided to have him re-tested for the illness: incredibly, he tested negative. He made it to the other side of the fence, but his time there was just too brief. When he passed, the only thing that gave us solace was that he died on an especially beautiful and perfect day, after time spent reveling in the entire big yard, and it was an extremely peaceful passing - he was just sleeping on his nest. This is very unusual. Because of the odds Cornish face, we feel almost competitive about their lives and care - meaning, we want them to break every record, and be spoiled here in every possible way. They suffer in the world in astronomical numbers and in ways we can’t even imagine. We wish Chico had been with us longer, but we are so so grateful he was with us here at all. We will never forget him.</image:caption>

<image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - Flowbee</image:title>
<image:caption>ARRIVAL AT IFAH: September 2017 AGE UPON ARRIVAL: Four years YEARS AT IFAH: Five AGE AT PASSING: 10 years A kind woman rescued Flowbee when extended family decided to cull (kill) their entire flock because the birds egg-production had declined and sadly, the hens were no longer deemed “useful” to the family. The woman was able to successfully advocate to save Flowbee’s life, but unfortunately the rest of Flowbees friends and relatives were all killed. The woman who rescued Flowbee did not have land or space to care for chickens as she lived in an apartment, so she reached out to us. When Flowbee arrived she had many overt health issues including digestive and reproductive/egg-laying issues, including laying broken and soft shelled eggs. We were able to provide her with repeated veterinary visits and care, and obtained for her a special hormonal treatment that has successfully been used in chickens to halt their egg cycles and basically save their lives, by acting as a kind of birth control, and thereby preventing Egg Yolk Peritonitis from further developing. We provided this treatment for her throughout her life and for the most part, her symptoms faded dramatically. Flowbee was very bonded to Larry and Blanche, though Flowbee also craved a lot of alone time too (she was very independent and sensitive.) She absolutely loved kale and to be honest we bought more kale for her than we have ever bought for ourselves! She also loved the outdoors and grass time and free ranging while under protective human supervision or in her safe pen with house getting as much time grazing as possible. She was a dear little bird and passed rather suddenly in 2020.</image:caption>

<image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - Lublue</image:title>
<image:caption>ARRIVAL AT IFAH: December 2019 AGE UPON ARRIVAL: 1.8 years (spent two years at different homes) YEARS AT IFAH: 3 years AGE AT PASSING: Nearly 5 years old. Lublue means “Love” in Russian. Little Lublue was rescued by a wonderful activist in NYC, from the horrific annual Kaporos Slaughter ritual that takes place on the streets of Brooklyn in NYC (An archaic ritual only practiced by the ultra orthodox, that sacrifices thousands upon thousands of birds per year on the streets of Brooklyn and around the world.) There are versions of the ritual that do not involve using any live birds whatsoever and a majority of people in the Jewish community do not condone the torture and harm of the ritual using live birds.) Lublue initially found a home with a backyard flock, but that home fell through only months later, and her devoted rescuer reached out to us. After a basic vet check-up and solid quarantine time, Lublue moved in to the Institute and seemed to be doing great, but in a few weeks showed some worrisome signs of health issues. Rushing her to a vet almost 2 hours away, tests and x-rays were done and a diagnosis was realized: Congestive Heart Disease. Little Lublue was treated with medication that really made a remarkable difference and her health rebounded; she lived another two years. Cornish chickens face so many unfair challenges due to how humans have manipulated their biology - - from the unnatural and intense weight gain, to heart issues, to struggling immune systems… but we have found with love and good care, we can give chickens like Lublue a great quality of life and we hope, in some way, try to make up for the very traumatic early experiences she went through.</image:caption>

<image:title>MEET THE RESIDENTS - Kevin</image:title>
<image:caption>ARRIVED AT IFAH: April 2020 AGE AT INTAKE: Approximately 1 year YEARS AT IFAH: 3.5 years AGE: Passed 7-29-22 at approximately 3.5 years. Kevin was such a sweet and beloved friend. He was with us for 3.5 years, and during that time needed constant special care, including re-curring hock sores that needed to be wrapped and cleaned every few days (we innovated using “toddler elbow and knee guards” later to make that task more efficient and sustainable and protect his hock better!) He had an internal inoperable mass that did not seem to deter him one bit, but also had some type of recurring resistant infection that also needed consistent monitoring and treatment. Still he managed to be with us many years. After he had to be euthanized because he could no longer stand and was not eating, and all efforts to diagnose and medicate failed to improve him, examination showed he had a very enlarged heart and severe joint degeneration (arthritis, which likely accounted for why he could no longer stand despite pain medication and all the comforts we could provide.) When he had been rescued, he had been put on a completely inadequate diet for his breed, by his well-meaning first caregivers who had not been educated about proper care and feeding. It is tragic that this likely did not set him up for success and we are saddened despite all the care and rehabilitation we gave him, that he was not with us longer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It takes a village to keep them safe and give them the quality of life they deserve. Friends (like Oliver and his mom Susan, shown here) volunteer to sit with the more vulnerable birds outside, so everyone can roam and be curious and play without fear. We provide the fair-trade, shade-grown, bird-friendly coffee… and mosquito nets! Larry, Flowbee and Honey appreciate the watchful care.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet the Team - MIRIAM KANEKO</image:title>
<image:caption>Miriam has been here since the beginning, coming to IFAH to help first as a volunteer and then joining as our first dedicated staff care partner. Her caring and giving heart and spirit are always in evidence - not only at IFAH but with her own efforts, as founder of NY Farm Animal Save. As NYFAS, she is also a principle partner and core volunteer with IFAH’s Happy Cart Free Vegan Food Program. (Miriam is pictured with the late, great Zoltan, one of so many birds here who have been uplifted by Miriam’s dedication.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet the Team - RITA BOLLA</image:title>
<image:caption>Rita Bolla is an incredible visual artist (Painter) whose work can be seen when you visit IFAH, and on her page on Facebook. She lives in the Hudson Valley with her two children, one cat and one rescued chicken. Her beautiful paintings of the residents of IFAH adorn the walls here and light up life for all of us daily, and Rita is best friend to Squiggy (pictured with her) here, Schmoopie and all the birds in the special care room in particular.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet the Team</image:title>
<image:caption>ANDREW GLICK (Treasurer - shown with Little Larry) Andy (shown here with Larry, a rooster rescued from NYC) is a friend, mentor and long time animal rights activist. Founder of WOODSTOCK ANIMAL RIGHTS MOVEMENT ((W.A.R.M.) in 1989 (!!!) and founding member of WOODSTOCK FERAL CAT PROJECT (W.F.C.P.) as well as a vegan activist, vegan lifestyle coach and educator, Andy brings to this board a profound history of animal rights and vegan activity in the region, as well as the vast experience he has gained supporting vegan causes and initiatives. It is incredible to know that Andy opened the FIRST fully vegan animal rights store in the United States in 1991 - The W.A.R.M. Store! He has been a great friend to us since the very first rescued bird in our care, and we even have a coop dedicated in his (and Larry’s) honor.</image:caption>

<image:caption>NANCY CHILDRESS (Vice President - shown with Percy) Nancy (Warren) Childress is a treasured volunteer and supporter of the Institute for Animal Happiness. Prior to moving to the Hudson Valley from New Jersey in 2015, Nancy was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She spent 30 years devoted to compassionate work in all aspects of the Child Welfare, Adoption and Foster Care fields. The last 5 years of her social work career were spent focused on hospice and long-term care. Nancy moved to the Hudson Valley to volunteer and then work at an animal sanctuary. She is presently happily retired and is a regular volunteer at IFAH, supporting as both a weekly volunteer with their Happy Cart Free Vegan Food program, and doing animal care. She loves to hold disabled rooster Percy (pictured above) and brings her kindness and compassion to all residents (human and non-human) of the Institute.</image:caption>
